Benediktweg im Chiemgau
Region Inn-Salzach - the Upper Bavarian home of
Pope Benedict XVI He was born in Marktl am Inn.
In Tittmoning he visited the nursery and already informed "I will also once Cardinal". In Aschau am Inn he attended the Volksschule and received the first communion. About Altötting, Benedict XVI writes: "I am fortunate to be born near Altötting, so the common pilgrimages with my parents and brothers and sisters belong to the most beautiful memories." The special connection of the Holy Father with the places of his childhood and youth between Inn and Salzach was the occasion for the dedication of a Benedict's way. The starting point of the 248-kilometer-long itinerary is the Papstlinde, which was planned by Papast John Paul II in 1980, at Bruder-Konrad-Platz in Altötting.
En route in the footsteps of Pope Benedict XVI. There are plenty of secluded scenery and numerous sights to be seen off the beaten track: important churches and monasteries, the historic Inn-Salzach-towns, picturesque villages and four-farms. To this end, a panorama of the Alps, which stretches from the Salzkammergut to the Zugspitze, is presented at several viewing points. Bathing fun and cooling on warm summers offer various bathing lakes and the towns and municipalities along the route. In the traditionally rich gastronomy of the region with its cozy country inns, well-kept Stadthotels, family breakfasts and farms, not least of all, a cycling enthusiast is a welcome guest.
The region Inn-Salzach is connected to the long-distance trains to Munich and Salzburg. The stretch network of the South-East-Bavaria railway allows for a multitude of day trips, the starting point and point of which can always be reached by train at cheap special rates. The free bicycle transport is valid on almost all sections of the route. A pre-registration is recommended.Fahrradgruppen wird eine Voranmeldung empfohlen.
Tour description:
In Alötting near the Papstlinde starts our bike tour and we drive via Perach to Marktl am Inn (birthplace of Joseph Ratzinger). From Marktl you follow the Traun-Alz-Radweg and continue on the Innradweg / Innspitzrunde to Burghausen. Our path leads and descends into the picturesque old town.
Along the Salzach we reach first the monastery Raitenhaslach and over the salt trade route Tittmoning, with its wide visible Burganlage (at times residence of the family Ratzinger).
From Tittmoning we follow the Salzachtalweg to Waging am See. Via the
Waginger See - Chiemseeweg and the Salz-Salinenweg we reach Hufschlag (former
home of the Ratzinger family).
From Hufschlag it goes to
the district town of Traunstein. (Joseph Ratzinger attended the
Chiemgau-Gymnasium and the Archbishop's Study Seminar here).
The Pope's ways in his "Father City" are summarized in his own brochure.
From Traunstein it is worth a detour to the Achental.
The main route of the Benedict Trail leads to Chieming and
Seebruck on the Chiemsee.
From Seebruck you can take a trip over the monastery path to the monastery
Seeon and the monastery Baumburg to Altenmarkt.
Cross
the Chiemsee-Rundweg and continue to Gstadt. From there, you can reach the
women's and men's island with the famous König Ludwig castle.
The Benediktweg leads to Breitbrunn and through the moraine landscape of the
Eggstätt-Hemhofer Seeplatte nature conservation area, which is designed by the
ice ages, via Eggstätt, Höslwang to Amerang.

northern direction and on secondary roads, we cycle to Wasserburg am Inn.
